Multiple Teams · Eddies win homecoming game against Plainwell

By Chris Graham, SWMsports.net

There was extra energy in the air on Friday night as the 5-0 Edwardsburg Eddies were set to take on the 4-1 Plainwell Trojans.  Not only was this a homecoming contest for the Eddies, but this was a #1 vs #2 matchup in the Wolverine Conference.

The Trojans came out of the gates firing on all cylinders offensively.  Their first drive last 4 minutes and resulted in a 42 yard touchdown run by Alexander Brown.  The Eddies took over and managed to take over 5 minutes off the clock before Mac Gaideski punched it in from 8 yards out.  Edwardsburg would convert on the two point attempt taking an 8-7 lead.

Plainwell marched down the field on 9 plays and responded to the Eddies with another touchdown on a 1yd TD run by Brown.  The Eddies would respond again…and again.  First on a 13 play drive with another 8yd TD run, but this time by Caden Goggins.  After a Nick Bradley interception of Matt Root, the Eddies were able to drive on 14 plays ending in a Chase Sager 1yd touchdown.  At halftime the Eddies led the Trojans 24-13.

Edwardsburg started the third quarter the same way they ended the first half.  Sager capped a 10 play drive with another 1yd touchdown run.  After a turnover on downs by the Eddies, Plainwell responded by advancing 51 yards on 7 plays with a 1 yard TD by Austin Williams.  That touchdown brought the score to 30-20 in favor of Edwardsburg as they headed into the 4th quarter.

In that decisive quarter Edwardsburg scored twice to seal the victory.  The first was on a pass from Matt Hepler to Bradley for a 5 yard receiving score.  The other was on a 60 yard scamper to the end zone by Bradley, which gave him 208 yards rushing on the night.  The final score on the night was 44-20 in favor of the Eddies.  The win locked them into the playoffs for the 8th consecutive year.

Another difficult challenge awaits Edwardsburg as they will travel to 5-1 Three Rivers for their next contest on Friday.  The Wildcats are coming off a 54-0 victory against South Haven.
