Multiple Teams · Eddies win thriller against Dowagiac

By Chris Graham,

This game was circled many calendars in the pre-season.  The winner would be viewed as the favorite to win the conference.  After many big plays and game changing moments the Edwardsburg Eddies walked away as victors with a final score of 28-20 over the Dowagiac Chieftains.

It was a low scoring first half that saw the Chieftains take the lead into halftime 7-6.  They scored on their first drive of the game on a 25 yard touchdown pass to Jamin Hunt.  It was a 12 play drive totally 68 yards.  The pass to Hunt was on 4th and 18 to go, and while Hunt was in double coverage he was still able to pull down the pass.

The Eddies responded on their first drive with 6 plays and 65 yards.  Nick Bradley ran it in for Edwardsburg from 44 yards out.  Both teams would have long second drives, but neither ended in points.  Edwardsburg had 125 yards of offense in the first half with Dowagiac compiling 138 yards.

In the second half both teams came out firing away offensively.  The Eddies started the second half with the ball, and after a 68 yard drive Bradley again scored on a run of 25 yards.  The teams exchanged turnovers shortly thereafter.  Dowagiac took a two point lead after Caleb Murphy brought in a 4 yard touchdown pass from Brenden Dudley making it 14-12.

The Eddies would respond on their next drive.  After 12 plays covering 65 yards Chase Sager would run it in from just a few yards away.  He would add on the 2 point conversion to make it 20-14 in favor of the Eddies.  After Duan Simpson of Dowagiac scored midway through the 4th quarter the Chieftains missed their PAT and the scored remained tied at 20 apiece.

Edwardsburg would score the game winning touchdown with less than 40 seconds remaining in the contest.  The Eddies would march down the field using most of the clock and it ended in another Sager touchdown from 2 yards out.  Edwardsburg would also add on the critical two point conversion giving them the 28-20 lead.

Dowagiac was the benefactor of excellent field position for the final drive.  Even after a pass interference penalty against the Eddies brought them into the red zone the Chieftains were turned away by the Edwardsburg defense.
